How Learned Helplessness, Low Self-Esteem, and Locus of Control Affect Your Mental Health Journey
Starting your mental health journey can feel pretty daunting, especially when that fear of failure kicks in. But hey, you’re not alone – so many people feel this way and it makes a lot of sense considering you haven’t learned the necessary skillsets and psycho-education to have strong mental foundations yet! Don’t think of your journey as “confronting your worst fears” because you really won’t need to in order to succeed. As I say in our Live below, I don’t think that’s helpful language anyway because it’s a bit catastrophic.
A lot of that fear comes from things like learned helplessness thinking style, limiting belief systems like low self-esteem, or feeling like you don’t have control over your own life. Does any of that sound familiar? Let’s break down why this happens and, most importantly, how the Thrive Programme can help you eliminate these limiting factors and get back in the driver’s seat of your mental health journey. Check out the video below where coach Matt and I explain more!
Learned Helplessness: Shifting from Powerlessness to Empowerment
Learned helplessness is a state where individuals feel unable to change their situation due to past experiences of failure or adversity. If you’ve ever felt like your efforts don’t make a difference, you might be dealing with this mindset. It can make starting something new, like the Thrive Programme, seem overwhelming.
The Thrive Programme is designed to teach you how to break this cycle with your own internal resources. We focus on empowering you by showing that your actions can lead to real change with the right amount and the right kind of effort. Through a range of strategies and support, you’ll learn that you have the power to influence your outcomes. This shift from feeling helpless to feeling empowered is a key part of the journey.
Low Self-Esteem: Building Confidence to Overcome Challenges
Low self-esteem often means doubting your abilities and feeling unworthy and undeserving of success. This can be a significant barrier when considering any mental health program. If you believe you’re not capable of achieving your goals, it’s easy to hesitate or second-guess yourself.
The Thrive Programme addresses this by helping you build stable robust self-esteem. Through learning new helpful habits in your thinking and reinforcement along with practical exercises, you’ll work on recognizing your strengths and capabilities. As your confidence grows, so does your ability to tackle challenges head-on so don’t worry about anything right now! It will come as you go through the manual and build the skills!
Locus of Control: From External to Internal
Locus of control refers to whether you believe you have control over your life’s outcomes. An external locus of control means you attribute success or failure to factors outside of your control, like luck or other people’s actions. This perspective can make it hard to take responsibility for your mental health and personal growth.
The Thrive Programme encourages a shift towards an internal locus of control. We help you see that your actions and decisions play a crucial role in shaping your life. By taking ownership of your journey, you’ll feel more in control and less at the mercy of external factors.
Transforming Fear into Opportunity
Understanding and addressing learned helplessness, low self-esteem, and locus of control are essential for overcoming the fear of failure. The Thrive Programme provides the tools and support you need to tackle these challenges effectively. By empowering you to take charge of your mental health journey, we aim to transform your fear into an opportunity for growth and success.
